In North Lincolnshire, a new community fitness program is proving that sometimes the simplest ideas can have the biggest impact. Launched in April, the Fit for Free scheme has already attracted nearly 800 participants in just three months.
The initiative offers eight weeks of complimentary access to gyms, swimming pools, and virtual fitness classes. It’s designed specifically for residents aged 66 and over, as well as people with learning disabilities aged 16 and above.
By removing the financial barrier that often keeps people away from regular exercise, the program is encouraging movement, connection, and healthier living. Councillor Rob Waltham summed it up: “Fit for Free is about more than just fitness – it’s about opportunity, connection and giving people the tools to live healthier, happier lives.”
It’s a reminder that public health isn’t just about medicine — it’s about prevention, community, and making wellness accessible to everyone. With almost 800 people already on board, this initiative shows that free, inclusive fitness can inspire lasting change.
