Enter Shikari last graced us in January and they came back to entertain once again at the Rockhal on the 29th of November. Only this time they were here to support one of their idols – The Prodigy.
Enter Shikari opened up there “Common Dreads” heavy set with the opener from that same new album. This poetic thought provoking start was followed by what we’ve come to expect from the St Albans (UK) four piece…a barrage of in your face schizophrenic, hard core, rave, drum n bass, techno and rock influenced thumping tunes.
This is now accompanied with the addition of a dup step influence which has certainly caught their ears in between the recording of their first two albums.

The new album is full of positive thought provoking lyrics and certainly has a much fuller grander sound to it – “Common Dreads” is Out Now.
…and the Prodigy…well they were pretty damn good weren’t they. A great set backed up with all the nostalgia one could hope for and a light show to burn one’s retina to boot!

Lloyd chatted to the lads before their gig at the Rockhal…mainly to Rob and Rory, but Chris and Rou were close by to contribute.

An excellent gig was seen Friday 13th of November at Atelier, as Editors (http://www.myspace.com/editorsmusic) took to the stage to display what an incredibly diverse and intense live band they have become.

The set was well balanced with songs old and new that got the crowd movement to the maximum with tracks like Bones, Munich, Bullets, Racing Rats and the stomping new Papillion
|

Lloyd caught up with Chris and Ed from the Editors to discuss the change in sound, what’s next and why they owe him the cost of a few flights to Luxembourg!

Just Jack
|

|
|
North London based musician Jack Allsopp treated Den Atelier to his musical genre crossing live performance, warming up what was a cold Halloween night on October 31st.

Armed with the crowd pleasing favourites and a mixture of Pop, Disco, Funk, Jazz, etc. influenced tunes from all three albums, Just Jack and his band induced a party atmosphere and a dancing, buoyant crowd demanding more. Maximo Park, Pete and the Pirates and Cougar
|
|
|
|
|
Maximo Park headlined Den Atelier on Monday the 19th October, with Paul Smiths accustomed energetic antics.
They played tracks old and new from their three albums to date, “A Certain Trigger” (Mercury Prize Nominated), “Our Earthly Pleasure” and “Quicken the Heart.”
The crowd were particularly enthused by certain Maximo Park classics such as “Apply Some Pressure”, “Girls Who Play Guitars”, “Books From Boxes” and the show stopping “Our Velocity.” The acoustic rendition of “Going Missing,” served as a highlight as stripped back percussion and bass worked to highlight Paul Smiths vocals and lyrics.
Lloyd caught up with Paul Smith before the show to talk about music, Luxembourg and crazy revolving dance floors in Newcastle.

Pete and the Pirates
Quirky? Eccentric? Quintessentially English? Just some of the descriptions of Pete and The Pirates... all we know is they don’t have make some great indie pop tunes, and are becoming better and better as the days roll by, both live and in song.
A second album is due soon, only being held back by a few finishing touches, so it wasn’t a surprise that a few new tracks on display. If they were anything to go by get ready for a second album reaching the quality of the first, Little Death.

Lloyd had a chat with Tom Sanders (lead vocals/guitar) and Dan Thorpe (lead guitar) to chat about the first album, touring (particularly about a phenomena called “tour bum”) and the future.

Cougar
A band with huge potential featuring the engrossing talent of Dave Skogan on drums. They seem to exude the feeling that we have a lot more to expect from them. The bands origins are from all over the states as they all met in Madison in Wisconsin due to for the most part college.
If they can find the time to stay together for a longer period of time other than touring we could find ourselves with a band reaching the progressive heights of Battles on our hands.

Snow Patrol
|
|
|
|
Snow Patrol put in a great performance on Saturday the 25th July at the Rockhal. New tracks as well as the old were showcased supported by some stunning visuals, so stunning in fact that we did not manage to catch any of them on camera apart from this amazing “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” moment (below - Spielberg would be proud).

Rock A Field + Eagles of Death Metal and Ting Tings Interviews

A rip roaring good time was had by all on this fantastic day! Great performances were coupled with some scorching heat. A brief round up of some sort would go a little bit like this:
The Virgins although accompanied on their tour bus by celebrity dullard Peaches Geldof it did not dampen their party beats’ ability to get the crowd moving!

The two man (although one happened to be a woman) powerhouse performance of the Ting Tings was great to see as it is always amazing to see just two people make such a racket (a good sounding racket of course!)

The old classics such as “Last Resort” were pulled out of the bag as Papa Roach took to the stage in all there emo glory.

As a young blonde boy (Jesse Hughes Son) came out on stage with a massive moustache to hand Jesse Hughes a guitar the stage was set for great fun to be had with the Eagles of Death Metal. The set included many of the old as well as the new |

A surprise act for many in the sense that it was an awesome performance was Peter Fox and his German brand of rap. He took to the stage with a superb backing band featuring dancing percussionists. The five drummers stole the show with their smooth moves and the throwing of their drum sticks.
|
A standard Razorlight set followed with tracks being played from all three albums. Notoriously moody lead singer Johnny Borrell used the stage to great effect getting great response from the crowd through tracks like “America”
|
The second from the top Glaswegians Franz Ferdinand were on good form and amongst jamming sessions including electro dance phases resided the Franz Ferdinand staples such as “Take Me Out”, “The Fallen”, “No You Girls”…etc.

The Kings of Leon have certainly grown in to an epic band and fill a headline slot with ease. There performance amply topped off the great day, but those who have been fans of the band for years might have been a bit disappointed to have not heard more tracks from the past (the pitfalls of becoming big off your 4th album!).
A good day all around!

YACHT and The Casio Kids

YACHT and the Casio Kids graced us with their presence over at Exit 07 on the 8th May!
It was a fantastically fun filled gig with plenty to talk about be it the Casio Kids keyboard driven dance pop, or YACHT’s LCD Soundsystem like beats and bleeps with a huge difference.
The Casio Kids' hugely enjoyable set got everyone moving as they swapped between instruments with ease throughout their set. Lacking their often accompanying puppet show it was quite obvious that their music sung in their native tongue stands alone, speaks for itself and doesn’t really need much explaining!

YACHT’s performance was something I have never seen before…no band, just beats… and just two individuals completely owning the whole stage!
When the stage at Exit 07 was completely cleared and Jona and Clair got out on stage I thought to myself…oh no this really isn’t going to work! But it did and with bells on. Both colossal characters danced around the stage jumped in the crowd and even did a power point slide show in the middle of the set….Bizarre but brilliant

Out of The Crowd Festival

Lloyd and Phoebe attended this great event and fully immersed themselves in the revelry! Not only was there an array of musical prowess on show but a free art exhibition which displayed a collage of local exhibitors’ works.
With some electric performances, it was brilliant to see such a diverse line up of new bands that are on the rise!

We Have Band

On Friday the 6th March We Have Band dropped in to Luxembourg to shower us with their indie/disco style brilliance!
Lloyd caught up with Darren Dede and Thomas before the gig to talk about the whirl wind ten months which saw them only put on their first live show in May 2008. If the gig was anything to go by they are damn quick learners!

Metronomy

|
|
Metronomy dropped in to Luxembourg on the 15th of February, to get the crowd moving at Exit 07, with their infectious beats and bleeps.
Those music connoisseurs who avoided the Pussy Cat Dolls like the plague (...but I can quite understand if you went to look at them), will tell you it was a fantastic performance aided by their ever present showmanship, dance moves and lights show!
Lloyd managed to get an interview with them before the show and talk about their music, the live show and the finer things in life such as hitting yourself in the eye with a metal pole.
